The implementation of the Initial Assessment and Referral Decision Support Tool (IAR-DST) training is gaining momentum both within CESPHN and nationally. National GP training numbers are closing in on 300 and over 50 of these have been trained by CESPHN. This year we are excited to be broadening the IAR-DST training offering to include all allied mental health professionals, practice nurses plus GPs and GP registrars.
The IAR-DST is an online tool that can be used by GPs and other mental health clinicians to guide referral of patients to appropriate mental health services across five levels of care. GPs are often the gateway to other mental health services and supports for patients, however it is also important for others working in the mental health space to be familiar with the IAR-DST for referral purposes and to encourage adoption of the “IAR language”. Widespread training and use of the tool will provide a consistent, standardized and transparent process across the sector, providing benefits for both patients and clinicians.
Results from our three month follow up survey reveal that over 80% of GPs have used the tool following their training session, and over 90% of GPs have said the IAR-DST has assisted them to consider all factors relevant to making a mental health referral and the tool accurately estimates the level of care required for their patients.
The IAR-DST training package is both a paid and RACGP-approved CPD activity. GPs will be eligible to receive a one-off payment ($300) and RACGP CPD hours for Education Activities (1.5 hours) and Reviewing Performance (1 hour) under the new CPD structure.
Currently all training sessions are held via Zoom, however if your practice is interested in organizing in-house training, please be in touch with the team using the contact form below and this can be arranged.
