Council for Intellectual Disability (CID) launched their new My Health Matters training video at the CESPHN Disability Network meeting in August.
The video was developed for use in training for schools, health and the broader community. It shows lived experiences of three people who use the My Health Matters folder.
The stories capture how it feels to be seen, to get timely and appropriate treatment and also demonstrates how people in health will find the folder mutually beneficial.
The training video is on YouTube and can be used and shared with appropriate credits to CID.
My Health Matters is a folder developed through discussions with people with intellectual disability and health providers about how to improve health outcomes and communication.
The folder was developed off the back of research showing that communication problems are one of the main reasons people with intellectual disability have poorer health outcomes.
As well as improving communication between health professionals and patients, the folder also seeks to remove any unconscious bias by encouraging health professionals to see their patient with disability as a person first.
Health professionals have welcomed the addition of mental health tools to My Health Matters.
