Reprocessing of reusable medical devices and other devices in health and non-health related facilities

Are you currently reprocessing medical devices in your practice?

Did you know the new standard for Reprocessing of reusable medical devices was released in December 2023.

AS 5369:2023 specifies the requirements and practices necessary for the effective and safe reprocessing, storage, handling and transportation of reusable medical devices and other devices used in human health care and other treatments.

Practices that reuse medical devices that require sterilisation, such as surgical instruments, can choose either to do all reprocessing on site, or outsource to an off-site provider (e.g. hospital) for sterilisation.

Reprocessing of items that require sterilisation should only occur within the practice if the current relevant standard can be met.

To preview the standard please see here –

Green Practice Checklist

CESPHN has developed a Green Practice Checklist for general practices and allied health services.

The checklist is a self-audit tool that provides an environmental assessment of your workplace.

It takes no more than 10 minutes to complete and will recognise your green achievements and identify ways that you could make your practice more sustainable.

The checklist is designed to benefit your patients, your practice and ensure that your business aligns with best-practice green principles.

CESPHN is deeply committed to strengthening the capacity of primary care providers to implement environmentally sustainable practices.

The Green Practice Checklist is one activity CESPHN is undertaking as part of our  Climate Change and Population Health Implementation Plan.

We are encouraging all practices in their sustainability journey and will provide you with the support and guidance you need.
