GP Psychiatry Support Line

The GP Psychiatry Support Line has been an initiative supported by CESPHN, together with other PHNs in NSW since 2018. The Department of Health is now funding this line Nationally and the line will be made available to all Australian-based GPs from 1st July 2023. The support line can give GPs free instant advice from a psychiatrist. The service is also expanding it’s operating hours to Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 7:00pm (AEST) excluding public holidays. During the calls you can cover topics such as medication, diagnosis, and treatment plans. You can call as often as you need.

The average phone consult is 12 minutes and is followed by a written summary of the advice. The service currently runs to 30 June 2023.

Staffed by psychiatrists, the Psychiatry Support Line was established in July 2018 in response to GPs indicating they would like timely access to psychiatry expertise. It’s not about triaging or referring consumers to a psychiatrist, but rather ensuring that consumers can be treated within primary care, under the guidance of their GP.

Registration for the GP Psychiatry Support line takes 2 minutes.

You’ll need your AHPRA Registration Number, and practice details.
