Managing Opioid Agonist Treatment during the holiday season

With the holiday season fast approaching, we can expect to see fewer clients voluntarily seeking treatment for their substance use. However, we can also expect to see a potential increase in drug related misadventures, and some disruption to Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) provision due to holiday closures, and prescribers and patients taking leave.

If you are an OAT prescriber, some forward planning will help ensure you and your patients are prepared:

  • Don’t forget to ask patients if they are going away, and if they need to arrange a temporary dosing point at their holiday destination.
  • Consider the need to adjust scripts to allow take-aways for public holidays and pharmacy closure days.
  • If you’re taking leave, organise adequate leave coverage to ensure patient needs are covered while you’re away

Remember, you can also remind patients of the two most simple things they can do to keep safe during the festive season:

  • Don’t drive or operate heavy machinery under the influence (of any drug)
  • Don’t mix alcohol with other substances

Have a wonderful break.
