A number of mosquito-borne viruses have been identified in NSW. Mosquitoes can transmit serious diseases that are spread to humans through mosquito bites.

Since December 2024, there have been detections of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and Murray Valley encephalitis in mosquitoes and animals in NSW.
