Become an ANSC GP

The GP Antenatal Shared Care (ANSC) programs in the CESPHN region are:

RPA Women and Babies and Canterbury Hospital
Royal Hospital for Women
St George and Sutherland Hospitals

GPs wishing to participate in the ANSC program are required to submit an online application form and fulfil the registration requirements.

There is an expectation that GPs wishing to register with the program have previous obstetric experience and assumed knowledge and skills in caring for pregnant women. For GPs with no or minimal obstetric experience, the GP ANSC program does not provide formal obstetric training. It may be possible to facilitate a hospital obstetrics placement, please contact ansc@cesphn.com.au for more information.

Affiliated ANSC GPs are expected to stay up to date with relevant hospital protocols and guidelines and fulfil ongoing education requirements. Information will be provided to GPs via quarterly ANSC e-newsletters, via email communication and via the CESPHN Maternal Health web page.

How to register as an ANSC GP:

Registration for the ANSC program requires:

Completion of on-line GP ANSC Program Application Form
Current AHPRA registration as a medical practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia
Current membership of a medical defence association with appropriate antenatal shared care indemnity cover
Attendance at an ANSC Orientation Session
GPs joining the RPA/Canterbury ANSC Program are required to complete the NSW Genetics First Trimester Screening module via the RACGP online learning portal.

ANSC orientation sessions are hosted by each of the hospitals 2-3 times per year. GPs will be advised on upcoming orientation sessions when applications are processed.

CAN GPS BE AFFILIATED WITH MORE THAN ONE PROGRAM?

Each ANSC program operates separately, with independent policies and procedures for clinical care, as well as separate orientation requirements.

GPs can be affiliated with more than one program and can apply via the online application form. You will be required to attend an orientation session for that program and ensure you are aware of specific program procedures, resources, and referral pathways.

Can GP Registrars join?

GP Registrars are eligible to join the RPA/Canterbury and St George/Sutherland Hospital ANSC programs and are required to be supervised by a recognised ANSC GP within the practice.

The Royal Hospital for Women does not accept GP Registrars. GP Registrars in their final year of training can submit an application and attend an orientation session however will not be active affiliates until they provide evidence of their GP status.

How is the hospital informed about GPs participating in the ANSC Program?

ANSC GP lists are updated and sent to antenatal clinics at each of the hospitals throughout the year.

How do GPs maintain recognition as an ANSC GP?

ANSC GPs are required to accrue a minimum of 12 CPD points in either antenatal and/or postnatal specific educational activities over each RACGP triennium. This equates to 6 CPD hours for the 2023-2025 triennium and can include any relevant activities under the new activity types of: Educational Activities, Measuring Outcomes and/or Reviewing Performance.

Relevant educational activities can be completed as face-to-face and online webinars (CESPHN or external events) or via online education platforms. CESPHN education events can be viewed in the Maternal Health Calendar and will also be posted on the events webpage and Sydney Health Weekly. Refer to the online education modules PDF for additional online activities. Please note these modules are updated regularly and some links may no longer be active.
