Evidence shows that people living with significant alcohol or drug related harm often delay seeking care and minimise their healthcare needs. They may live with chronic or complex illnesses with adverse health impacts routinely seen in much older patients. As a result, when assessing people who have used substances, a more complex clinical picture may emerge during treatment planning. This is where the GP Liaison in Alcohol and Other Drugs (GLAD) service is particularly valuable to general practice.
The GLAD service is a CESPHN-funded initiative delivered in partnership with specialist Drug and Alcohol services across SESLHD, SLHD and St Vincent’s Health Network. It provides support in providing care for patients with alcohol and other drug concerns, within general practice. It is a flexible, low threshold, advisory and shared-care service, offering telephone advice, co-consultation, assessment, treatment planning, withdrawal management, education, and referral pathways.
