From 1 July 2026, new Medicare requirements will mean that patients (or their authorised representatives) must provide a physical or electronic signature before a bulk-billed claim can be submitted, with verbal consent no longer accepted.

This webinar will guide practices through the changes, including daily workflows, ensure signed Assignment of Benefit (AoB) records are securely stored and audit-ready, and implement the necessary staff training, policy updates and software solutions.

It will also outline the key responsibilities across the practice team, including reception staff, practice nurses and GPs.

Special attention will be given to the impact on aged care, including strategies to identify and contact authorised decision-makers for residents unable to provide consent, and the growing importance of electronic consent solutions for residential aged care facilities and outreach services.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Describe the key Assignment of Benefit changes commencing 1 July 2026, including consent requirements, documentation standards, and Medicare compliance obligations for bulk-billed services.
  2. Implement practical workflows to obtain, record, and retain Assignment of Benefit consent, ensuring compliance across general practice, aged care, home visits, and telehealth services.
  3. Identify compliance risks and develop strategies to support audit readiness, including managing consent for vulnerable patients, substitute decision-makers, and residential aged care residents.
