Please join us for an education session discussing diabetic eye care in the community to be presented by Paula Katalinic.

Patients often present to the GP seeking advice on eye conditions. GPs have an important role in providing primary health care to individuals with diabetic retinopathy and recognising the signs and symptoms that require referral to other health professionals. This lecture will review the ocular complications of diabetes, with a primary focus on the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of diabetic retinopathy. In addition, the talk will consider how GPs, optometrists and ophthalmologists can collaborate to improve ocular health outcomes.

Paula is a senior optometrist at the Centre for Eye Health in the University of New South Wales and also works as Professional Services Manager at Optometry Association NSW/ACT. She has a strong focus on the provision of both clinical services and education while also being involved in clinical research. She has been invited to speak at conferences in Australia, New Zealand and the US. Her main focus in on diabetic retinopathy and other vascular eye diseases.

Learning objectives: 

1. Describe the lesions of diabetic retinopathy and other ocular complications associated with diabetes.  

2. Understand the importance of regular examinations and early detection of diabetic retinopathy in preventing vision loss. 

3. Recognise how collaboration between GPs, optometrists and ophthalmologist can contribute to improved ocular health outcomes for patients with diabetes.
