From Itinerary to Immunisation: A Practical Approach to Travel Vaccination

Gain practical guidance on conducting travel health assessments, recommending appropriate vaccinations, and supporting travellers to stay protected before, during and after their journeys.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Describe the epidemiology of measles, including declining immunisation coverage trends, recent global outbreaks, and the associated risks to Australia.
2. Apply current Australian immunisation guidelines to assess measles risk, identify vaccination requirements, and implement appropriate vaccination recommendations to protect individuals and communities from measles infection.
3. Describe current NSW Health immunisation recommendations for diphtheria and Japanese encephalitis and apply these recommendations when assessing patient risk, developing vaccination plans, and supporting clinical decision-making
4. Apply a structured pre-travel risk assessment to identify VPD risks based on a traveller’s destination, itinerary, duration of travel, planned activities and individual health factors.
5. Develop individualised, evidence-based travel vaccination recommendations by balancing traveller risk, vaccine indications, timing constraints and patient-specific factors.
6. Integrate best-practice travel immunisation advice and patient education strategies into clinical practice to support safe international travel and reduce the importation of vaccine-preventable diseases into Australia.
