96% of women/birthing parents begin breastfeeding, yet many experience feeding challenges that can lead to ending breastfeeding earlier than intended. What are we missing?

General practitioners and nurses play a vital role in identifying concerns, providing timely support, and helping mothers and birthing parents achieve their infant goals. Join us for this practical and informative session designed to enhance the knowledge and confidence of GPs and nurses in supporting breastfeeding and infant feeding in primary care.

This event is open to all GPs and nurses across the CESPHN region who would like to attend (not just ANSC GPs).

Presented by: Dr Kavita Thanakrishnan, Breastfeeding Medicine Specialist, Perinatal GP and IBCLC

The session will cover:

• Breastfeeding physiology and mechanics
• A clinical framework for assessing and managing common complications
• Case-based examples from clinical practice

Learning outcomes:

• Explain the key physiological and mechanical factors that govern milk production and successful milk transfer
• Implement a clinical framework to assess and manage common breastfeeding complications in practice
• Apply a case-based approach to work through real-world breastfeeding presentations

Target audience: GPs and nurses

3 ANSC Points have been allocated for this activity (this equates to 1 hour out of the 6 hour minimum education requirement for ANSC GPs in the 2026-2028 triennium). All ANSC GPs from across the CESPHN region are welcome and will receive ANSC Points accordingly.
