Psychotropic medications are commonly prescribed for patients with intellectual disability with mental health problems or behaviours of concern. General practitioners are often in charge of reviewing and ongoing prescribing once they have been initiated.

• Assess mental health concerns in people with intellectual disability
• Understand the principles of prescribing psychotropics for patients with intellectual disability, including medication choice, initiation, monitoring, and de-prescribing
• Discuss principles of managing behaviours of concern in people with intellectual disability, including non-pharmacological and pharmacological strategies
• Understand NDIS requirements around restrictive practices and what this means for prescribing as a GP
