This CPD session is designed to support GPs in understanding their role within the Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) framework.

This session provides a clear overview of the legal, ethical, communication, and clinical considerations relevant to general practice.

GPs will gain practical guidance on responding when VAD is raised, supporting patients compassionately, and navigating referral pathways and resources, regardless of their level of participation in VAD.

Learning Outcomes:

• Describe the legal and ethical framework governing VAD, including GP responsibilities, boundaries, and conscientious objection provisions.
• Outline the VAD assessment process and patient pathway, with a clear understanding of each stage.
• Identify the role of the GP when a patient raises VAD, including supportive actions for both participating and non‑participating clinicians.
• Recognise key clinical and psychosocial considerations when caring for patients exploring or undergoing the VAD process.
• Apply safe, compassionate, and appropriate communication strategies when discussing VAD with patients and families.
• Access relevant resources, training, and referral pathways to support best-practice GP care.
