Join us online for this breakfast session on opotmising patients prior to surgery

Presented by Dr Kim Phan Thien , Colorectal Surgeon, St George Hospital

Janine Bothe, CNC Surgery. St George Hospital

Although all efforts are made to reduce waiting times for surgery, this period represents a timely opportunity to optimise the persons health in preparation for their upcoming surgery. In doing this it can result in significant functional capability so the patient can withstand any postoperative inactivity and associated decline and return to their pre-operative functional status and quality of life following their surgery.

GPs can be integral in providing this opportunity to enable the patient to attend their surgical procedure in optimal condition with the result of the best possible outcome.

Learning outcomes:

1. Cover key elements, evidence and benefits for preoperative optimisation.

2. Discuss priorities that will have the biggest impact on the patient going to surgery in the best possible condition.

3. Cover the important components of optimisation needed to manage patients preoperatively in General Practice.

4. Implement current evidence with respect to optimising elective surgical patients with hypertension, aneamia and diabetes including pharmacological and non-pharmacological management

Target audience: GPs, nurses and allied health

We are excited to bring you a breakfast webinar session as part of the St George Hospital education program for GPs. The Integrating Care Education program is an opportunity for hospital based specialists and their respective primary care specialists to meet in a forum to discuss the care of their patients. The topics covered will assist with patient care where it meets at this important interface. The program will cover topics relevant to both groups to improve movement to and from the two spheres of care. It will be delivered by hospital specialist with an interest or expertise in community based care
