Eye conditions are common general practice presentations in Australia and range in nature from minor problems to vision-threatening emergencies.

Please join us for this in-person event with the interactive presentations and practical workshops in Ophthalmology, proudly developed in partnership with Retina and Eye Consultants Specialists team, with the clinics located in Hurstville, Miranda, Wollongong and Chatswood.

The aim of this event is to upskill practicing GPs in assessment and management of some common or complex eye presentations in general practice settings, including appropriate investigation and specialists referral.

This is an in-person event, places are strictly limited. Registrations are essential. Walk-ins will not be accepted.

Practical activities under supervision:

Eye emergencies and the Red eye

  1. Assess visual acuity.
  2. Assess pupil responses.
  3. Assess eye movements.
  4. Review evaluation and management of patients with a red eye, presented as short clinical scenarios:

Diabetic Retinopathy

  1. Practical demonstration of OCT scan and widefield fundus photography.
  2. Visual fields to confrontation.

Vision loss and Cataracts

  1. Pupil assessment 

Retinal Detachment

  1. Assess visual acuity
  2. Assess pupil responses
  3. Confrontational field testing
  4. Ophthalmoscopy

Oculoplastics. Eyelid: Assessment of a lid position and lesions

  1. Eyelid eversion to identify aetiology 
  2. Safely taping eyelids to reduce exposure risk 

Glaucoma

  1. Humphrey visual field interpretation including Esterman visual field

 Strabismus in Children

  1. Use of an ophthalmoscope and toys to check a baby’s vision and check for a squint in a child

Please note: practical sessions are compulsory as the part of the in-person event. Partial attendance or participation in practical sessions will not be accepted for RACGP record and would need to be self reported.
