Nicotine, alcohol and other drugs are commonly used in our communities. While not all use is harmful, pregnancy is a period when substance use can significantly affect outcomes and have lifelong consequences for the unborn child. It is also a time when many women feel motivated to make positive changes because they want the best for their baby.
Even with this motivation, change can still be challenging. Planning a pregnancy, navigating pregnancy itself, and maintaining changes after birth all come with their own barriers. GPs play an essential role in supporting patients through these transitions.
This session explores the risks associated with nicotine, alcohol and other drug use during pregnancy, and highlights the importance of non judgemental conversations and practical interventions that empower women to make and sustain healthier choices.
