Primary health care providers have an important role to play in supporting patients experiencing domestic and family violence (DFV). It is estimated a full-time GP unknowingly sees five patients per week experiencing DFV and a health professional may be the only person a victim-survivor has contact with. This training will provide insight into the specific needs of CALD patients experiencing DFV and how health professionals can support them.

Learning objectives: 

• Describe issues specific to CALD patients experiencing DFV
• Identify a range of practice considerations when seeing CALD patients experiencing DFV
• Outline a number of helpful responses to CALD patients experiencing DFV
• Understand the barriers to safety for patients on temporary visas who experience or are at risk of DFV
• Understand that DFV can affect a temporary visa holder’s status in Australia
• Identify a potential immigration problem in a patient and how they can best support their patient including how/where to refer them for legal advice.
