Hand and wrist complaints are common in general practice, yet selecting the right imaging investigation can be challenging.  

This session will provide GPs and AHPs with an overview of the most appropriate imaging pathways for common hand and wrist presentations, helping to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. 

Attendees will learn how to image common hand and wrist presentations, recognise urgent and red flag conditions that require prompt recognition and referral, and gain an update on current imaging approaches for arthritis and synovitis. Through case-based discussion, participants will leave with greater confidence in choosing the right imaging pathway for their patients. 

Learning Outcomes:

1. Recognise common hand and wrist pathologies, including nerve compressions, tendon pathology, and bone/soft tissue conditions (e.g. Dupuytren's, ganglions, OA)
2. Review typical clinical presentations and outline an appropriate assessment and management pathway for each
3. Identify urgent and red-flag presentations that require prompt referral or escalation
4. Compare the imaging modalities available for hand and wrist complaints, including their relative advantages and disadvantages, and select the most appropriate for common presentations
5. Examine current treatment and imaging approaches to arthritis and synovitis, integrating clinical and radiological perspectives

Dr Sebastian Fung MBBS (Hons) FRANZCR, Radiologist with areas of expertise include musculoskeletal, spinal and neurological imaging

Dr Sebastian Fung is recognised for excellence in musculoskeletal, spinal, and neurological imaging, with particular expertise in complex diagnostic assessment and advanced image-guided intervention.  

A graduate of the University of Sydney with First Class Honours, Dr Fung completed his specialist radiology training at Westmead Hospital, where he received the M.G.F. Donnan Prize from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists. He subsequently undertook fellowships in Paediatric Radiology and Musculoskeletal Imaging, earning the Charles L. Christian Award in New York.  

His practice combines diagnostic precision with extensive experience in advanced image-guided interventional procedures, providing tailored treatment for a broad range of musculoskeletal and spinal conditions and is known for his calm, reassuring manner—guiding patients through every step to support comfort and confidence.  

This combination of diagnostic precision and procedural proficiency allows Dr Fung to deliver targeted care from initial imaging assessment through to image-guided treatment.

Dr Nicholas Haydon, Specialist Reconstructive, Plastic and Hand Surgeon

Dr Nicholas Haydon is a Specialist Reconstructive, Plastic and Hand Surgeon based in Sydney. He is a Visiting Medical Officer at St Vincent’s Hospital and Royal North Shore Hospital, and regularly travels to Tamworth to provide specialist care to regional patients. His areas of expertise include hand and peripheral nerve surgery, reconstructive surgery, skin cancer surgery and general plastic surgery. Dr Haydon is actively involved in research, surgical education and GP education, and is passionate about improving access to specialist care for rural and regional communities across New South Wales.
