Dr Horowitz, Clinical Research Fellow in Psychiatry with the NHS in the UK, Visiting Lecturer in Psychopharmacology at King’s College, London, and author of Royal College of Psychiatrists’ guidance on “Stopping Antidepressants”, known as The Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Outline when deprescribing antidepressants and other psychotropic medication may be a recommended approach to care for a patient.
  2. Describe risks associated with stopping psychotropic medication without adequate tapering.
  3. Identify distinction between withdrawal effects from psychotropic medication and relapse of an underlying mental health condition. 
  4. Summarise current principles in safe tapering psychotropic medication, including different classes of drugs and adjustments required for individual patients.
