Immunisation National Immunisation Program

Summary of change

  • From 1 July 2026, Capvaxive®, a new 21-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (21vPCV), will be added to the National Immunisation Program (NIP).
  • Capvaxive® will replace both Prevenar 13® and Pneumovax 23® for adults.

New funding eligibility

Pneumococcal vaccine (Capvaxive®) is now recommended and free through the NIP for:

  • Adults aged 65 years and over (previously 70 years and over)
  • Aboriginal adults aged 25 years and over (previously 50 years and over)
  • Adults aged 18 years and over with specified medical conditions

All adults who have previously received a dose of any other pneumococcal vaccine are recommended to receive a dose of Capvaxive® at least 12 months after their last dose.

Discard Prevenar 13 and Pneumovax 23

  • Do not use Prevenar 13 or Pneumovax 23 beyond 30 June 2026
  • Stock should be discarded and reported in the State Vaccine Centre system as an ‘expired vaccine’ dated 30 June 2026.

Clinical resources and advice

The NSW Immunisation Schedule will be updated to include Capvaxive® for eligible cohorts. Order the new poster for your clinic – indicate size preference (A3 or A4) and quantity required.
