Share by Default requirements now in effect: What healthcare

From 1 July 2026, new Share by Default legislation requires pathology and diagnostic imaging reports to be uploaded to My Health Record by default, unless a legislated exception applies or an extension has been granted.

Key points for GPs, Allied Health and Practice Managers

  • More pathology and imaging reports will now be available in My Health Record, improving access to information for both clinicians and patients.
  • Reports authored by, or on behalf of, a pathologist or radiologist must be uploaded to My Health Record. The requirement applies to reports only, not diagnostic images.
  • Healthcare providers can continue accessing results through their existing clinical software and workflows.
  • My Health Record can provide visibility of reports from other providers involved in a patient’s care, supporting care coordination and continuity of care across settings.
  • Patients may view some of their results through My Health Record, creating opportunities for more informed follow-up consultations.

What this means in practice

  • When requesting pathology or imaging tests, clinicians should:
    • Discuss with patients that reports may become available in My Health Record.
    • Confirm appropriate follow-up arrangements.
    • Direct patients to resources that help them understand and interpret results.
  • Providers should be aware that:
    • Report availability depends on how long a test takes to be processed and finalised.
    • Once finalised, reports will generally be uploaded to My Health Record within 24 hours of being shared with the requesting provider, unless an exception applies.
