The Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) has provided updated information for GPs participating in Antenatal Shared Care (ANSC). This update includes changes to the GP Liaison Midwife service, updated contact and referral pathways, routine RhD NIPT screening information, vaccination recommendations during pregnancy, clinical placement opportunities and current research recruitment.
We would like to advise that the dedicated GPSC Liaison Midwife role has now been integrated into the Clinical Coordinator portfolio. This change is part of an internal restructure and will not impact the support or communication provided to General Practitioners.
The service will continue to operate Monday to Friday, with the same contact details and mobile number remaining in use. There are no significant changes to referral pathways, communication processes or the support available to GPs.
Our preferred method of contact is via phone call or text message, which allows us to respond promptly to enquiries and facilitate timely communication.

If a patient prefers MGP and capacity is available, please continue to refer to an ANSC obstetrician. Once the referral is received, RHW will allocate an appropriate MGP obstetrician internally.

To qualify for Perinatal Mental Health input, women must be planning to birth at the Royal Hospital for Women.
GPs should send electronic referrals directly to the Antenatal and Perinatal Mental Health tab. The team also sees partners of babies admitted to NICU.
RHW Maternity Outpatients now offers routine non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for fetal RhD status to all RhD negative women between 12 and 26 weeks’ gestation.
For optimal accuracy, testing is recommended from 18 weeks’ gestation onwards, as the concentration of circulating fetal DNA in the maternal bloodstream increases with advancing gestation. Samples collected earlier in pregnancy may yield an inconclusive result and require repeat testing.
To ensure results are available to guide antenatal Anti-D administration at 28 weeks, testing should be performed before 26 weeks’ gestation wherever possible.
This screening enables more targeted use of Anti-D prophylaxis by identifying women carrying an RhD positive fetus who will benefit from antenatal Anti-D administration.
Vaccination during pregnancy is an important part of protecting both mothers and their babies from serious illness.
If vaccinations are not available in your practice, please encourage women to attend their local pharmacy, where eligible pregnancy vaccinations can be accessed free of charge, or to discuss vaccination at their next appointment with their RHW midwife.
ANSC General Practitioners (GPs) are required to utilise and adhere to the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) Clinical Business Rules (CBRs) to ensure safe patient care and evidence-based clinical decision-making.

GPs are encouraged to share information about the TTAP Study with pregnant women who are less than 17 weeks’ gestation, have a history of asthma and are booking in at the Royal Hospital for Women.
These women may be eligible to participate in the TTAP Study, which aims to improve asthma management during pregnancy.
