FIVE QUESTIONS is where we ask members of the community to talk about how they stay HEALTHY.Dr Damian Gill has adapted his exercise routine around new parenthood and his put his concerns about the environment into action. He was disappointed about the lack of global action on climate change. So he joined Doctors for the Environment Australia.
I’m a new parent, and my wife and I are currently introducing solids to our baby. We are all big fans of porridge (baby included), and have really upped our porridge game after learning about the world porridge making championship.
I had a tuna melt for lunch and some carrots, cucumber and hummus plus chia seed pudding for a snack later in the afternoon. For dinner, I tried out a new recipe – mushroom and kimchi ‘sausage’ rolls – with a caprese salad.
2. What exercise did you do yesterday?
Since having a baby, exercising regularly has been a lot more difficult. Fortunately, our baby loves being outside so I do a lot of walking while pushing the pram. Does picking a baby up off the ground count as an 8kg squat? If so, I’m getting a lot of strength and conditioning training!
3. When did you last see a primary health professional?
It’s been nearly a year, since before my son was born. I got a general check up and made sure all my immunisations were up to date prior to his arrival.
4. What do you do to improve your mental health?
Joan Baez said, ‘action is the antidote to despair.’ My involvement with the Doctors for the Environment Australia [DEA] has been fulfilling in this respect.
The lack of global action on climate change can be a source of disappointment, however, working with like-minded health professionals and advocating for action on climate change has been empowering and an important protective factor of my mental health.
5. What are your health goals for the next month?
I am really keen to do improve my cardiovascular fitness. I’m doing a bit of swimming at the moment but would like to fit in a few more runs. With hockey season commencing soon my goal is to have improved my endurance by then.
