In 2026, the composition of influenza vaccines will transition from quadrivalent to trivalent formulations.
This aligns with recommendations from the Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee released late last year, and is consistent with World Health Organization guidance on 2026 southern hemisphere vaccines.
The 2026 vaccines contain two A strains and one B strain; the B Yamagata lineage virus is no longer included in influenza vaccines as it may be extinct.
In addition to the injectable inactivated influenza vaccines (IIVs), the intranasal live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) FluMist is available for free in NSW for children aged 2 to less than 5 years, and on the private market for patients aged up to 18.
A single dose of Abrysvo is recommended for all pregnant women in each pregnancy from 28 weeks gestation to protect their infant. Maternal immunisation reduces the risk of severe RSV disease in infants <6 months of age by around 70% from transfer of RSV-specific antibodies from the mother to the fetus during pregnancy.
Abrysvo is the only RSV vaccine approved for use in pregnant women. Arexvy should not be given to pregnant women.
The Australian Immunisation Handbook chapter on respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has been updated to include this recommendation.
The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) has updated its influenza immunisation resources for the 2026 season, including:
The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has also released its Program advice for health professionals for the 2026 influenza season, which outlines vaccine recommendations, eligibility, timing and more.

New AusVaxSafety data for Pfizer LP.8.1COVID-19 vaccine shows that rates of side effects, medical attendance and impact of routine activities following vaccination are comparable to the previous variant (JN.1) vaccine.
Of the 2200 vaccine recipients who participated in the active vaccine safety surveillance, 74% experience no side effects in the first 3 days. Among those who did report a side effect, local reaction at the injection site (pain, itching, redness and swelling) were most common and generally short-lived, resolving within one day or less.
