Australian cases doubled compared to last year
Australian health authorities are remaining watchful as signs suggest that 2025 is shaping up as another year of high disease burden around the world.
Australia has recorded 102 measles cases in 2025 at the time of writing, nearly double the 57 cases reported in 2024 and four times the 26 recorded in 2023. Recent months have seen multiple alerts issued across NSW and Australia after cases were found in returning international travellers, and active alerts remain in place in several parts of the country.
While Australia’s overall vaccination rates are still strong by international standards, vaccine coverage has decreased in recent years and fallen below the aspirational 95% coverage target – leading the interim Australian CDC, the Australian Health Protection Committee and others to urge health professionals and the community to prioritise measles vaccination
New NCIRS measles resources
NCIRS this week published a brand-new measles FAQs resource along with a new hub for future measles-related outputs.
The FAQs neatly distil the Australian Immunisation Handbook measles chapter and offer a concise summary of current recommendations and clear answers to common questions about the viral disease and its prevention.
