It is important to ensure that pneumococcal conjugated vaccines are prepared correctly prior to administration.
The products are a suspension containing an adjuvant which can settle out of suspension during storage, meaning that a white deposit and clear supernatant may be observed. The pre-filled syringe must be shaken vigorously prior to use.
Please see below for the manufacturer’s advice on the preparation and administration of pneumococcal conjugated vaccine, including Prevenar-20 and Prevenar-13:
Step 1. Vaccine re-suspension: Hold the pre-filled syringe horizontally between the thumb and the forefinger and shake vigorously until the contents of the syringe are a homogeneous white suspension. Do not use the vaccine if it cannot be re-suspended.
Step 2. Visual inspection: Visually inspect the vaccine for large particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration. Do not use if large particulate matter or discolouration is found. If the vaccine is not a homogenous white suspension, repeat Steps 1 and 2.

If your practice hasn’t yet installed Bp Premier Spectra SP1 Revision 3 and the November 2025 Data Update, it’s important to do so as soon as possible.
These updates ensure your practice can continue interacting with the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) including the mandatory AIR reporting changes which were in effect from 24 October 2025.
Practices that have not installed this update and may experience errors when submitting AIR data, and AIR submissions will be rejected for not including a mandatory antenatal status.
