Are your patients at risk of hepatitis B?

A pack of resources and tools is available to support healthcare providers who may engage people with, or at risk of, hepatitis B. As part of a national awareness effort, Hepatitis Australia is running a community awareness campaign, supported by the Australian Centre for Disease Control.

As part of this campaign, a GP information pack is available here. There are also community resources available in English, Chinese and Tagalog on the campaign website.

An estimated 220,000 people in Australia are living with chronic hepatitis B, yet one-third remain undiagnosed and more than 75% are not engaged in regular care. Early diagnosis and ongoing management are crucial to prevent serious liver disease and liver cancer, even for people who show no obvious symptoms.

People born overseas and those who speak a language other than English at home experience a higher prevalence of hepatitis B. In some areas, more than 1 in 100 people may be living with chronic hepatitis B.

Healthcare providers play a key role in encouraging testing, supporting culturally appropriate care, and connecting patients to treatment and follow-up services.

This campaign has been developed to support people from Chinese and Filipino communities, who are at a higher risk of hepatitis B.

HepLink is also available as a free, national service providing confidential, locally tailored information and support on viral hepatitis for both healthcare providers and patients:

Supporting patients to get tested and engaged in care is the most effective way to reduce hepatitis B-related harm in our communities.
