The Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) has introduced annual due and overdue rules for influenza vaccines. If an influenza vaccine has not been administered since 1 March of the current year, a dose will show on a patient’s AIR profile as:
Importantly, this change does not impact eligibility for childcare enrolment, family assistance payments, or other immunisation-linked benefits. If a child is only overdue for influenza (and no other diseases), their vaccination status will remain as ‘up to date’.
Existing requirements for other NIP vaccines remain unchanged.
All FluMist stock funded through the NSW Nasal Spray Influenza Vaccination Program has now been exhausted in the State Vaccine Centre. No further orders can be placed for the 2026 influenza season.
Government-funded FluMist that is still in date can continue to be offered to children from 2 to <18 years.
The injectable flu vaccine Vaxigrip is also still available for free for children aged 6 months to <5 years as part of the NIP.
Once you have exhausted your government-funded FluMist, you can continue to offer it for a fee using your private stock.
Join us in person on Wednesday 23 September for a focused session examining the vital role of immunisation in preventing illness and reducing hospitalisations among Residential Aged Care Home (RACH) residents.
Attendees will gain practical insights into AIR use, cold chain management, and effective tracking of residents’ vaccination status to improve workflow processes.
The session will cover billing pathways, including MBS items, pharmacy reimbursement, and key aspects of the Aged Care On-Site Pharmacist (ACOP) program and National Immunisation Program, while also highlighting ways to strengthen collaboration between pharmacist immunisers and RACHs.
Learn clinician-led approaches to managing vaccine hesitancy through evidence-based communication techniques with residents and families.
Ideal for GPs, nurses, pharmacists, and aged care professionals, this event provides valuable tools to strengthen immunisation delivery, improve coverage, and support healthier ageing outcomes in RACHs.
