FIVE QUESTIONS is where we ask members of the community to talk about how they stay HEALTHY. Journalist Jim Hope stays keeps himself in excellent condition regular exercise – often with friends.
1. What did you eat yesterday?
Pre-breakfast was a banana, then breakfast itself was at a cafe: two very weak flat whites, and a granola bowl with yoghurt and fruits. Lunch was a salad and cheese wholemeal sourdough sandwich, plus a protein shake, while dinner was a Greek rice dish (“Spanakorizo”, a tender, lemony rice with spinach and dill), a couple of slices of homemade pizza, a mixed salad of lettuce, tomato, lebanese cucumber and carrot, and a dessert of vanilla ice-cream.
2. What exercise did you do yesterday?
I walked from Coogee to Maroubra for my cafe breakfast, then stood for two hours as a volunteer in a cycle stall at an eco-fair. I took the bus back and then did an hour’s light weights in the gym. Total steps for the day: 12,304.
3. When did you last see a primary health professional?
I saw my physio a month ago to manage my hamstring tendonitis (both legs) and tennis elbow on my right side. My physio says I have been overdoing things!
4. What do you do to improve your mental health?
Exercise is my primary mental health cure, particularly walking, cycling, swimming and gym weights. I also find reading non-fiction books and general news magazines in the park helps me relax mentally.
5. What are your health goals for the next month?
Get my hamstrings and elbow back to full strength, and do more walking and riding for general fitness.
