Australia not meeting national vaccination targets

Newly appointed Chief Medical Officer, Professor Michael Kidd, has drawn attention to the nation’s declining vaccination coverage in the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing Annual Report 2024–25, indicating that ‘for children aged one, 2 and 5 years, Australia has fallen below the 95% threshold which is critical for maintaining herd immunity.’

The report also indicates that vaccine coverage targets have not been met for:

  • children at 5 years of age (≥95% target)
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children between 12 and 15 months of age (≥95% target)
  • HPV vaccination of adolescents at 15 years of age (≥90% target by 2030).

The reasons are both interrelated and complex, according to the report, which cites National Vaccination Insights research pointing to a range of factors, including misinformation, lack of opportunities to discuss vaccination with providers, and out-of-pocket costs.

The 2024–25 Annual Report provides a transparent account of the Department’s activities, financial performance and progress toward health and wellbeing goals.
