FIVE QUESTIONS is where we ask members of the community to talk about how they stay HEALTHY. Wendy Frew, who writes a substack column “Care-full” on how to navigate the aged care trajectory, loves keeping fit.
1. What did you eat yesterday?
I always start the day cooking steel cut oats with sultanas and a splash of milk. Once cooked, I top that with a spoon of Greek yogurt, a teaspoon of sunflower seeds, a handful of walnuts and whatever fruit is to hand. Yesterday, like most days, it was a kiwi fruit. That kept me going until lunch time, which was left-over veggie mix of eggplant, tomatoes, capers, black olives and anchovies, on sourdough bread. Dinner was a beef stew.
2. What exercise did you do yesterday?
None! That makes me cranky
3. When did you last see a primary health professional?
Several months ago, I saw a dentist for a check and clean. All good!
4. What do you do to improve your mental health?
When I need to clear my head, I go to one of two places: a sea pool not far from my home where I do 20 laps and then sit and watch the ocean; or I take binoculars to a nearby headland to watch for birds and whales. If I see a Peregrine falcon I feel I can cope with anything! I also write a column about aged care, called Care-Full. It helps me to feel like i’m sharing some useful information and that makes me feel good.
5. What are your health goals for the next month?
To get up earlier so that I can exercise before the day’s chores or paid work begin. Exercise helps me sleep better and being outdoors helps me put things into perspective.
