NSW Health Expands Intranasal Spray Influenza Vaccine Access for Children and Adolescents

NSW Health has announced an expansion of its Intranasal Spray Influenza Vaccination Program, broadening eligibility to include all children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 years.

Providers can now offer the nasal spray influenza vaccine FluMist for free to all patients in this age range.

Previously limited to children aged 2 to 4 years, this change is effective immediately and aims to enhance influenza prevention efforts across the paediatric population.

Additionally, the availability of alternative vaccine delivery modalities may contribute to reduced vaccine wastage and improved program efficiency.

GPs are encouraged to incorporate FluMist into routine practice for children and adolescents aged 2-17 years, and to discuss this option with families as part of shared decision-making around influenza vaccination.
