NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

The case for nurse practitioner telehealth

Starting in November, nurse practitioners will be required to follow the same 12-month existing patient relationship rule for telehealth consultations as general practitioners.

Following recommendations from last year’s MBS Review Advisory Committee report, nurse practitioners will soon be required to adhere to the same existing relationship rule for telehealth consultations as general practitioners.

Under this rule, Medicare benefits cannot be claimed for a telehealth appointment if the practitioner has not conducted a face-to-face consultation with the patient within the previous 12 months.

Pragmatic Artificial Intelligence (AI) guidance for clinicians

The Commission has published updated guidance to assist clinicians in the practical application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. As AI technologies continue to emerge and be adopted at a rapid pace, they offer considerable potential to enhance patient care. However, their swift integration also brings new challenges—particularly when the supporting evidence for safety and effectiveness lags behind their deployment.

NSW Cervical Screening Program launches a new resource

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, and Australia is on track to become the first country to equitably eliminate it. Achieving this goal depends on maintaining and improving screening and early detection rates, ensuring that all eligible individuals with a cervix are offered timely cervical screening and appropriate follow-up care.

To support your conversations with patients, a new resource is now available on colposcopy. This tool aligns with the updated National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP) Clinical Guidelines, released in April 2025.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

The ENABLE Study: A NHMRC Partnership Project

ENABLE is a clinical trial designed to connect patients and clinicians, ensuring that patients receive timely, evidence-based wound care. It will also enhance continuity of care across different health services, fostering improved teamwork among healthcare providers.

This study will involve patients at your practice/facility with chronic or complex wounds (wounds that have not healed within 30 days) and clinicians who provide wound care at your practice/facility.

Your practice/facility will be the first in Australia to trial a model of care that will strengthen and enhance your capacity to care for vulnerable patients and prioritise wound treatment and provide continuous monitoring and management.

For further information contact Dr Michelle Barakat-Johnson (Executive Research and Clinical Lead, Skin Integrity and Nurse Manager, Sydney Local Health District) who is the Chief Investigator of the study on 0425 248 946 or via michelle.barakatjohnson@health.nsw.gov.au.
